Pavement drummer Gary Young dies aged 70 as group’s frontman Stephen Malkmus pays tribute

Pavement’s Gary Young has died aged 70, it was announced on Thursday. 

The musician, who was best known as original drummer of the indie rock band, passed away on August 17, with the group’s frontman Stephen Malkmus paying tribute on social media. 

Gary joined the band in 1989 and featured on Pavement’s debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, before leaving the group in 1993. 

Sharing a post to Twitter, Stephen wrote: ‘Gary Young passed on today. Gary’s pavement drums were ‘one take and hit record’…. Nailed it so well. rip.’ 

Their first record label, Matador Records, also shared a heartfelt post.

 They added: ‘We were exceedingly lucky to know the amazing human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young. Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates.’
