A pedestrian was hit and killed by a police van answering a 999 call.

Suleyman Yalcin, 44, got off a bus in Tottenham, north London, to have a family meal at his brother’s house when he was knocked down while crossing Seven Sisters Road.

Mr Yalcin, who was originally from Turkey and lived in the Wood Green area, was hit by a marked police van in the incident at 6.45pm yesterday.

Police and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service tried to save him at the roadside, but Mr Yalcin died shortly after.

His brother Sinasi, 37, a graphic designer, said the family were ‘devastated’ and demanded answers from the authorities.

He told the Evening Standard: ‘He was on his way to eat with us. When he didn’t arrive we kept trying his phone. Then we discovered there had been in a fatal accident involving the police, we are heartbroken.

‘We understand he had just got off the bus. How could this have happened? We want answers – the police have told us nothing yet.’

‘He was a lovely, kind and gentle person. We can’t believe he has gone.’

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed and has launched an investigation.
