Penn Badgley has been rudely shamed online by Ryanair – with the budget airline appearing to insinuate that he needs to go to Turkey for a hair transplant.

To celebrate the fifth and final season of the Netflix series You, which is set for release on April 24, the 38-year-old Joe Goldberg actor surprised fans in New York at a pop-up of Mooney’s Bookstore on Tuesday afternoon.

Alongside fellow cast members Madeline Brewer, Charlotte Ritchie, Anna Camp, Griffin Matthews and Frankie DeMaio, Penn met with fans and posed for photo opportunities.

To mark the moment, Netflix shared a picture of the Gossip Girl alum standing behind the counter of the bookstore dressed in a dapper light greyish blue pant suit and tie to the streamer’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The account captioned the image, ‘Hello, YOU.’

While the upload sent fans into a frenzy, Ryanair couldn’t help but seize the moment to tear into Penn’s appearance – or so it appeared.

Reposting the snap, Ryanair wrote: ‘Hello, TURKEY.’

Turkey has become a popular destination for hair transplants, offering significantly lower costs compared to many other countries.

Social media users, naturally, were left with slacked jaws after seeing the airline’s cruel comment.

Taking to the replies, one said: ‘Roasting everyone.’

‘Don’t do that,’ another said.

Others were amused by the savage post, writing: ‘Oh you got jokes.’

Ryanair’s jibe comes just days after Pen opened up on his body dysmorphia battle which made him ‘hate his physique.’

The actor shot to fame playing Dan Humphrey in high school drama Gossip Girl aged 20 having entered Hollywood as a teenager.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, he explained the pitfalls of becoming a sensation at such a young age and how he tried to copy the image of men he saw in movies.

Penn said: ‘I know that I hated my body and simply wanted a different one.

‘There was just a period where, coming out of depression and isolation, I was jumping willfully into, but also being thrust into, this world where the more conventionally beautiful I seemed, the more successful I might be, the more value I might have.’

The star believes he piled on weight as a reaction to his parents’ divorce when he was 12, as well as his social isolation as a child, before he later attempted to look like the stars he admired on the screen.

He admitted that Gossip Girl’s central premise of wealthy teens growing up in New York City’s Upper East Side did not ease his obsession with how he looked.

Ryanair has established a prominent social media presence over its savage responses to customer complaints in recent years.

The Irish budget airline has amassed a legion of fans on TikTok and X with its ‘unhinged’ replies to plane passengers who complain of hidden charges, lack of space or wrongly assigned seats during their travels.

The company also pokes fun at rival airlines, as well as its own service, on TikTok, where it boasts 1.5million followers and has more than 41.9million likes, making it the biggest airline brand on the platform.

Earlier this month, Ryanair mocked a jetsetter who moaned of being assigned an incorrect seat.

Attaching a photograph of himself pointing to the adjacent wall whilst seated, the passenger, who is bald, wrote: ‘When you book a window seat, but forget it’s Ryanair.’

The airline took aim at the passenger’s hairless scalp, writing: ‘Turkey flight?’

Another flier accused the company of assigning them a windowless seat after they’d specifically selected a window view.

They wrote, ‘Beautiful views today from the window seat,’ to which Ryanair responded, ‘That’s a wall.’

Penn is preparing to say goodbye to his Netflix series You, which comes to an end on April 24 after five seasons.

For the final instalment, the show returns to New York City.

‘I do think that the show is at its best in New York,’ Penn told Tudum. ‘It’s where it started. It’s where it’s ending — it’s fitting.’
