Penny Lancaster banned Rod Stewart from being friends with Donald Trump

Why I stopped hanging out with Donald Trump: Rod Stewart reveals wife Penny Lancaster banned them from being friends because she thought the former President’s attitude towards women was a ‘disgrace’

Sir Rod Stewart has revealed his wife banned him from being friends with Donald Trump.

The singer told how Penny Lancaster stopped him attending events hosted by the former US president because she thinks his attitude to women is a ‘disgrace’.

Stewart and Trump are neighbours in the exclusive Palm Beach area of Florida and have known each other for decades.

The 78-year-old Maggie May star has performed at Trump’s casinos in the past and previously described him as a friend.

However, he said former model Penny, 52, put a stop to the friendship because of Trump’s controversial comments about women.

In an interview with Scottish Field magazine, Stewart said: ‘I have a house in Palm Beach just up the road from Trump.

‘I used to go to his Christmas party and the balls he held but my wife said ‘no’. There was stuff he was coming out with, what he was saying about women he had known in the past, and Penny said ‘you’re not going – he’s a disgrace’.’

In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election a tape emerged of Trump boasting about grabbing women by the genitals.

Speaking in 2018 about their friendship, Sir Rod said: ‘I’ve known Trump for a long time. I’ve done concerts for him in his casinos. I live probably three-quarters of a mile down the road from him on the beach in Florida.

‘He’s always been extremely nice to me. He’s let my friends use his golf course for nothing, and I’ve had no problems with him at all.

‘Is he a great president? Nah. I think his moral compass is way off. But on the other hand the country’s doing extremely well, although I believe part of that was down to president Obama – the country was starting to do great anyway, he’s just carrying it on.’

n Donald Trump last night said he would ‘never leave’ the race for the White House even if he is convicted of illegally retaining highly-sensitive material and lying about it.

He will appear in court in Miami tomorrow but told media outlet Politico he would not give up on his 2024 presidential election hopes.

In Columbus, Georgia, where the former president was making his first speech since being indicted, he told supporters: ‘I’ve put everything on the line and I will never yield.

‘I will never be detained.’
