A Virgin Australia plane has been forced to make an emergency landing after it burnt up fuel in the same airspace for two hours.

But the flight had to be aborted due to a technical issue, with passengers told there was a problem with the Boeing 737’s hydraulic wings.

The plane circled around Rottnest Island and off the coast of Perth to burn off fuel.

It landed back at the airport at around 3:05pm

Airport fire crews arrived at the scene as the plane safely landed.

Engineers are looking at the aircraft, which will remain grounded.

A Virgin Australia spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: ‘We are working to recover guests on another flight to Brisbane today.’

‘The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.’

Passengers onboard the flight will be put on a new flight that is scheduled to depart the airport at 7:05pm local time.

More to come.
