Perth father’s terrifying near-death experience with Meningococcal

A Western Australian father had his hands and feet amputated after contracting Meningococcal.

Jake Clift, 28, was rushed to hospital when he began having fits and vomiting at his home last year.

By the time the ambulance arrived the father-of-two’s lips had turned blue and his body was shutting down.

Jake Clift, 28, thought he had a severe case of gastro on Boxing Day 2017, he slept most of the day and woke up to a fit and fainted twice

‘I can’t believe how quickly it got me, I had to ask the doctor what happened,’ he told Seven News.

During the five-minute journey to Armadale Hospital from the family home, the 28-year-old began to develop a deep purple rash over his chest, arms and legs.

When he arrived at the hospital his organs had begun to fail, he was put on life support and his family were told he wouldn’t make it through the night.

His chance of survival was five per cent and he was placed in an induced coma.

That night his liver and kidney had failed, his lungs collapsed and his body was turning black from the lack of oxygen.

He made it through the night and was diagnosed with the ‘W strain’ of Meningococcal, bacterial meningitis and septicemia.

Despite defying the odds that evening, the infection worsened and attacked his kidney’s as well as his liver.

‘He wasn’t ready to go, he’s definitely a fighter,’ Jake’s brother Travis said.

Mr Clift was transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital and had his hands and leg amputated.

By this time the virus was out of his system but had damaged his body so severely he lost all of the skin on his legs and hands.

After a series of painful operations and countless trips to dialysis to filter his blood he is able to begin his recovery process and go back home.

Mr Clift warned – even you have to pay for the vaccination, it should be prioritised.

He said: ‘Just make sure you get the needle because it comes fast that’s how quick it got me’.

A GoFundMe has been set up by the father so he can work towards purchasing instrumental items to move around.
