A spur of the moment overseas trip has become the holiday from hell for a Perth miner who was allegedly stabbed and bashed in an unprovoked attack.

Luke Jeffers, 26, has undergone 21 hours of surgery and remains in intensive care after he was allegedly set upon outside a nightclub in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

Footage filmed by shocked onlookers shows the West Australian outnumbered and attacked by a group of at least five men.

With gaping wounds to his neck and shoulder, he then fell backwards and hit the ground, lying in a pool of blood.

Mr Jeffers suffered a broken C3 vertebrae in his back, an 8cm slash to the left side of his neck, a large laceration to his shoulder and a severe, life-changing laceration to his left hand.

His mother Jo and grandmother have travelled from Perth to rush to his hospital bedside.

Mr Jeffers is in a stable condition but will spend an ‘undetermined amount of time’ in intensive care, according to his sister Brooke.

She has set up an online fundraiser to assist with rising medical bills and to transport her brother home.

‘Unfortunately, as this was such a last-minute trip, Luke did not have travel insurance,’ she wrote.

‘The medical bills, the ongoing rehab and what it is going to cost to get him home with the support of a doctor is an expense that our family was not prepared for.’

More than $50,000 has been raised within 24 hours as the online fundraiser was inundated with messages from wellwishers.

‘The response so far has been amazing and we are so thankful and forever grateful to everyone who has donated and shared,’ Ms Jeffers posted on Facebook.

Police in Malaysia have arrested three men aged 20-30 in relation to the alleged  brawl.

They remain in custody and are due to face court on Tuesday.

Police will allege one of the men used a sharp object to cause injuries to Mr Jeffers’ neck, torso and hands.

Further arrests haven’t been ruled out as investigations continue.
