Perth synth-metal band Voyager named Australia’s surprise new entrant for Eurovision Song Contest

Perth’s synth-metal band Voyager is set for stardom as they prepare to play in one of the greatest shows on Earth.

The boys have been named Australia’s entrant in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place on 13 May in Liverpool, England.

Fans watched as the exciting announcement unfolded on YouTube on Friday morning.

After 20 years of trying to break into the music business, the band will perform their track Promise at contest.

Their chosen song is said to be a perfect fit for the world stage as it combines both heavy metal and pop music.

Lead singer of Voyager Danny Estrin said of the amazing opportunity: ‘As a long-time Eurovision fan, this is the pinnacle…we feel it’s one of our best yet.’

Their involvement in the grand competition will mark the eighth time that Australia has taken part.

Sheldon Riley placed 15th in the contest last year after he performed his ballad Not the Same.

While judges praised his performance, unfortunately viewers didn’t share the same enthusiasm, and he only received two points from the public vote.

Australia’s most successful participant so far is Dami Im who placed second with her rendition of Sound of Silence in 2016.

Jessica Mauboy didn’t achieve the same success in the competition in 2018, and placed in 20th position with her tune We Got Love.

Although Ukraine won last year’s contest, Eurovision won’t be held in the runner-up country because of the Russian war.

The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will be broadcast on SBS for viewers Down Under, and hosted by Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasey.
