Three teenagers will wake up on Christmas morning in hospital after appearing to car surf on a ute before the driver lost control.

Police believe one of the youths was sitting in the tray of the ute just minutes before the P-plater, who has allegedly failed a breath test, crashed on Sunday morning.

Perth police say CCTV footage shows two other passengers on top of the Holden Rodeo utility car-surfing on the roof in the lead up to the accident.

The smash took place at the intersection of Tyers Road and Jarrah Road at 2:50am when the ute rolled onto its side and slid across the street.

The three unrestrained passengers, two 18-year-old men and a 17-year-old girl, were all taken to Royal Perth Hospital.

Their condition is understood to be serious but stable.

The driver has been questioned however no charges have been laid, police say.
