The Golden Retriever was the second most popular breed choice while the French Bulldog came in third and the Border Collie fifth.

Also on the list was the Miniature Dachshund at number six, the Labrador in eighth, German Shepherd at number nine and the Maltese cross in tenth.

Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia said the statistics give a ‘lovely insight’ into the types of pets Aussies are welcoming to their families with a ‘great’ combination of pure-bred and mixed breeds.

She said it’s important for Australians looking to adopt a pet to research the different types of breeds and their compatibility to their lifestyle.

The Border Collie was the fifth most popular breed while the Miniature Dachshund, Labradoodle, Labrador, German Shepherd and Maltese Cross were also in the top 10

The Border Collie was the fifth most popular breed while the Miniature Dachshund, Labradoodle, Labrador, German Shepherd and Maltese Cross were also in the top 10

‘Particularly with dogs, different breeds require different levels of exercise. Some simply adore a Netflix binge on the couch, while others will require a decent amount of exercise to keep them happy and healthy,’ Nadia said.

‘We always encourage people to look past the atheistic qualities of a pet and make sure their typical breed traits suit your household.’

Nadia recommended considering adopting a pet even if you have a particular breed in mind.

‘Contact local breeders who offer rehoming services or call your local shelter can allow you to offer a pet a forever home while obtaining the pet of your dreams,’ she said.

Five questions to ask when finding the right dog breed for you

  1. How much room do you have? This will impact the size of the pet you can have.
  2. How much time do you have?
  3. How active are you and your family?
  4. How much training will the dog require?
  5. How much experience do you have with training?
