A cocker spaniel amongst the crowds of well-wishers greeting The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at St Andrews today caught Kate Middleton’s eye, as she chatted with her owner about her family’s late pet, Lupo.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, who was returning with Prince William, 38, to visit the Scottish university where the couple first met 20 years ago, stopped to chat to the owner of the glossy-coated dog – named Lily, even bending down to say a cheery ‘hello’ to the pet.

After telling the owner of the pet she liked Lily’s raincoat, the royal also shared that the couple had spotted an Italian restaurant in the town earlier that day which shared the same name as their late dog, saying it had brought Lupo into their minds.

The royal was filmed telling members of the crowd: ‘We noticed the cafe or bar called Lupo’s, and we had a dog, who’s no longer with us, called Lupo.’

The black Cocker Spaniel, a wedding present from Kate’s brother James, died in November, with the couple saying at the time the pet had been ‘at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much.’

The gathered crowd then offered their sympathies and Kate asked Lily’s owner whether, like Lupo, the dog was a cocker spaniel, to which she replied that she was.

After telling the group it was ‘very nice to meet you’, the couple, shielding from the inclement Scottish weather with umbrellas, moved along.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge later spoke to students at the university about their pandemic experiences and visited St Salvator’s, the halls of residence where the young prince met his future wife.

The couple became friends in their first year before romance blossomed after William saw ‘hot’ Kate strut down a charity fashion show catwalk in a sheer dress. They graduated in 2005 and William proposed five years later.

William and Kate were in excellent spirits as they took a trip down memory lane before continuing to Fife where they met local fishermen and their families.

Kate was smartly dressed in a £650 striped Erdem jumper, £549 Jade Holland Cooper blazer and £90 Veja trainers, after changing out of the £159 Barbour jacket and See by Chloe boots she wore to race land yachts this morning.

The Duchess also let down her ponytail, added a slick of makeup and swapped her gold hoop earrings for a slightly more decorative pair from Freya Rose.
