Peter Overton chokes on water live on air during Channel Nine news broadcast

News anchor Peter Overton struggles to continue Channel Nine broadcast after choking on glass of water live on air: ‘I’m so sorry’

Peter Overton hit a snag during Monday evening’s broadcast of the Nine News bulletin.

The anchor returned to air from a commercial break coughing and spluttering as he struggled to gain his composure.

‘I’m so sorry, I’ve just had a glass of water and it’s gone down the wrong way,’ the 57-year-old apologised to viewers.

The veteran anchor continued to choke and clear his throat while saying ‘excuse me’ over and over before he managed to settle the discomfort.

It’s not the first time the respected news man has been caught up in a gaffe live on air.

He made headlines late last year when he made an amusing mistake during his coverage of the Queen’s funeral.

Peter and departing A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw jointly anchored the network’s coverage of Her Majesty’s funeral at Westminster Abbey.

But they were mocked around the world after failing to identify Britain’s then-Prime Minister Liz Truss as they provided commentary at the service.

The British leader climbed out of her car to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, but Peter and Tracy were left scratching their heads as to who she was.

‘So, this is a significant motorcade, we are being told now,’ Peter said.

‘Come with us as we try and identify who is getting out of the car. This is under police escort of course. I would suggest this might be royalty, Tracy.

‘Hard to identify. Maybe minor royals, members of the… I can’t identify them at this point…’

Moments after the gaffe, Peter Overton issued a correction.

‘I’m told that was Liz Truss the new Prime Minister in the distance, she could see hopping out of the car. Thank you very much for that information,’ he told viewers.

In 2004, Peter married fellow broadcaster Jessica Rowe and they share two children together, Allegra, 16, and Giselle, 13.
