Phil Neville ‘in advanced talks’ to become Portland Timbers’ coach, as ex-Inter Miami and Lionesses manager could make a swift return to MLS

Phil Neville is reportedly close to making a return to MLS.

The former coach of Inter Miami, Neville was fired by the club in June – less than two months before Lionel Messi joined the side.

However, Neville is now in ‘advanced talks’ to become the next head coach of the Portland Timbers, according to The Athletic.

The site said that the deal is not yet completed.

Portland recently fired Gio Savarese, who led the club to MLS Cup in 2018 and 2021.

Neville went 31-41-11 as Miami’s coach, though the Herons had lost 10 of 15 league matches at the time of his dismissal.

After his departure, Miami announced the arrivals of Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who led the club to a Leagues Cup title.

However, the club failed to qualify for MLS’ postseason.
