Philadelphia Eagles star’s father ‘is caught with a loaded gun’ during traffic stop in New York City

The father of a Philadelphia Eagles star has been allegedly caught with a loaded gun while driving in the Bronx, according to multiple reports.

The New York Police Department discovered the weapon after pulling Alibay Barkley over during a traffic stop at the intersection of 140th Street and Third Avenue in Mott Haven, Fox News reported on Thursday night.

It’s unclear if other passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop.

Alibay Barkley is the father of former Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who was raised in the Bronx and played in New York for the last six seasons. Barkley Sr could now end up being charged with criminal possession of a weapon, per Fox News.

Saquon, 27, was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018. He signed with the Eagles as a free agent in March.

Little is known about Barkley’s father other than that he was a boxer during the NFL star’s youth and served a year behind bars, according to Essentially Sports. Barkley Sr moved his family from New York to Pennsylvania after his jail sentence, per the outlet.

At one point during his childhood, Barkley, 27, experienced homelessness while his father was in prison.

His brother Alibay Jr. was once a baseball player drafted by the Los Angeles Angels, of the MLB. His great uncle is former UFC heavyweight Iran Barkley.

Earlier this offseason, The Eagles welcome Barkley with a three-year, $37.75million deal. His $12.583 million annual average salary ranks fourth among NFL running backs, per Spotrac.

Barkley rushed for 962 yards and six touchdowns in 14 starts last season, just shy of his fourth 1,000-yard season. In his final appearance for the Giants, he posted 97 yards from scrimmage and two scores in a 27-10 victory over the Eagles in Week 18.

Barkley gained 865 yards (615 rushing, 250 receiving) with seven TDs in nine career games against Philadelphia.

Drafted No. 2 overall in 2018, Barkley made two Pro Bowls with New York on top of winning the NFL’s OROY award. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 5,211 rushing yards in 74 starts.

Barkley replaces D’Andre Swift, who finished fifth in the NFL with a career-high 1,049 rushing yards during his lone season with the Eagles in 2023. Swift, who signed with the Chicago Bears, had replaced Miles Sanders, who ranked fifth in the NFL with a career-best 1,269 rushing yards for Philadelphia in 2022.

Barkley’s front-loaded deal reportedly includes $25.5M guaranteed and a signing bonus of $11.625M. Only $1.5M of his $12M base salary for the 2026 season is guaranteed.

He was an All-American and a two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year at Penn State, where he rushed for 3,843 yards and 43 touchdowns in three seasons (2015-17).
