‘It was very, very hard being in there every day and seeing the way Glenn was,’ Carol Richardson said.

The self-employed plumber was forced to retire and is now claiming damages as well as loss of earnings.

His lawyer has said there is a rising number of people whose serious heart conditions are missed.

‘You’ve got to exclude the possibility of a cardiac cause and to do that you do an ECG – it’s a very simple test,’ lawyer Anne Shortall said.

Mr Richardson now faces long-term effects following his episode, with his heart muscles reduced to one quarter the working capacity which it was.

He remains determined to live life as best he can now helping out at his local rugby club and playing with his grandchildren as much as he can.

The Philip Island man hopes that by speaking out he can encourage others to seek medical help straight away and insist the proper heart checks are done to clear any serious issues.
