Picture shows why Nancy Pelosi suffered shocking fall down marble stairs on Europe trip

Congressman Mike McCaul revealed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s stilettos were likely to blame for her fall in Europe which resulted in hip replacement surgery.

The Texas lawmaker was with the 84-year-old California Democrat during the European trip when she took a nasty tumble.

‘I was right next to her. She likes to wear high heels, very high,’ McCaul recalled.

‘She was on one of her last steps on this marble staircase. It didn’t have a railing, and she lost her footing and fell to the ground,’ he said.

McCaul recounted how he helped pick her up right after the fall, and they took a picture together.

‘You could see me holding her up by her hand, and then very soon thereafter a vehicle showed up, and she was taken to the hospital,’ he said.

Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas) noted former Speaker Pelosi was wearing ‘very high’ heels when she took a tumble last Friday in Europe. He said despite surgery, the 84-year-old is ‘doing well’

An image shared by the U.S. embassy in Luxembourg showed the bipartisan congressional delegation on the steps.

84-year-old Pelosi was at the end of the front row holding McCaul’s hand in what appeared to be a death grip.

In the image, she had on a pair of sky-high heels similar to ones she is famous for wearing as she makes her way through the U.S. Capitol in Washington on a regular basis.

Pelosi’s spokesperson released a statement over the weekend that she had a successful hip replacement surgery and thanked the medical professionals in both Germany and Luxembourg.

McCaul noted that Pelosi is ‘doing well’ and wished her a speedy recovery.

Pelosi and other lawmakers was in Luxembourg with a bipartisan congressional delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when she fell on Friday.

She was treated at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg before being transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at the U.S.’s Landstuhl Army Base in Germany where she underwent surgery.

McCaul said he spoke with her on the phone and she ‘had a lot of energy.’ He described her as ‘very spunky’ and said she wants to ‘get out of there.’

It is not yet clear when Pelosi will be able to travel back to the U.S. from Germany.

‘Overall she’s in good spirits, and there’s no more health danger to her other than, you know, a hip replacement,’ McCaul said.

As the image of Pelosi standing in heels after her fall gained attention online, her spokesperson weighed in on X.

‘In every way, she’s the strongest person I know. The best to ever do it,’ Ian Krager wrote in a post.

Pelosi had to cancel the rest of her engagements on the congressional delegation trip due to the fall.

Her incident comes days after outgoing GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, fell during a Senate lunch this week.  He suffered a sprained wrist and a scrape on his face.

Pelosi just successfully ran for reelection in California and signaled that she intends to run again in 2026.

Although she stepped down from an official Democratic leadership position in 2022, she still holds much power.

Pelosi has for years been seen strolling through the halls of Congress and taking questions while wearing remarkably high heels.

In 2018 at the age of 77-years-old, Pelosi stood on the floor of the House in four inch heels for a record-setting eight hours as minority leader as she filibustered in defense of so-called Dreamers.

She even had on sizable heels when she made her way to war-torn Ukraine to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv in March 2022.
