A doctor has been charged with the use of a ‘noxious substance’ on a woman who was taken to hospital in an ‘unresponsive and serious’ condition.

Dr Hossam Metwally, 58, is due to appear before magistrates today after he was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and administering a noxious substance.

Police removed items yesterday from a house in Grimsby, where he lives with his younger partner.

A woman was taken away from the property in an ambulance on Friday.

Police said she is critical but stable. 

A number of neighbours claimed to have received treatments from Metwally, who also worked in two hospitals as an anaesthetist and pain clinic specialist.

One woman said: ‘I went with back pain and he offered a range of treatments – acupuncture, pain injections and tens machines [pain-relief devices].’
