PICTURED: NYU student shot dead by jealous NYPD cop in lovers’ spat

The 24-year-old love rival shot dead by NYPD cop Yvonne Wu was pictured on Thursday afternoon as her family and friends tried to raise money for her family.

Jamie Liang, 24, was collateral damage in the messy breakup between Wu, 31, and Jenny Li, 23.

Liang was shot dead by Wu after arriving home with Li at Li’s Bensonhurst apartment. Li and Wu dated for two years but broke up last month in ugly circumstances. Friends say the cop, who was eight years older than her ex-girlfriend, was jealous and possessive.

Wu opened fire on the pair, shooting Liang multiple times and Li in the torso. Li survived and is in the hospital but Liang died Wednesday night.

On Thursday, her devastated family in Staten Island declined to speak.

Friends set up a GoFundMe for Liang’s family on Thursday and shared kind words about her.

‘Our beloved friend, Jamie Liang, was taken away from us on October 13, 2021. She was a victim in a Brooklyn homicide case. We are raising funds to help her parents and family with the funeral arrangements.

‘Jamie was a 24–year-old dental student at NYU who had a bright future ahead of her. She was loved by so many and filled every room with her kindness and lively spirit. We live to honor all the joy that she brought to the lives of her family and friends,’ the page says.

Liang was believed to have been studying dentistry. She was due to graduate in 2024.

The page seeks to raise $20,000 to pay for Liang’s funeral. By 5 p.m. Thursday, more than $7,000 had been raised.

Wu – who has been a cop for five years and works out of the 72nd Precinct just four miles away – opened fire, shooting Liang in the chest and Li in the torso. Liang died in the hospital 50 minutes later. Li survived and is still in the hospital but is in a good condition.

Video shows the moment Wu was frisked by a patrol car before being taken away in handcuffs. She was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where she remained as of Thursday morning undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

The New York Attorney General’s Office told DailyMail.com it was reviewing the case, but no charges have been filed yet. Because it involves a cop shooting a civilian, the case is automatically referred to the AG’s office.

Friends of the younger women say Li and Wu were in a romantic relationship for two years until last month. One friend said they broke up because Wu was a ‘jealous psychopath.’ They say she stalked Li and refused to give back her key to the apartment after they broke up.

One NYPD source told the New York Post that she was still spending the night at Li’s home and was hopeful that they would get back together.

‘She was still staying there on and off. She was still staying there some nights. It’s not that strange, maybe she thought it could still work out,’ the source told the paper.

Liang’s family on Staten Island were too distraught to speak to reporters on Thursday.

Emergency operators who picked up a frantic 911 call from one of the victims heard the shooter yell in the background: ‘I told you not to mess with me… this is what you get!’

After shooting the two younger women, Wu walked outside the apartment and waited for cops to arrive.

She told one officer: ‘I shot them both. The gun’s inside,’ according to a source.

NYPD detectives are investigating whether or not Wu used her service weapon to carry out the shootings.

At the scene on Wednesday night, NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Kemper told reporters it was a ‘domestic’ situation, and that Wu and Li had been romantically involved.

Friends of the two younger girls told The New York Daily News that Wu had been stalking Li ever since they broke up a month ago, and that she was a ‘psychopath’.

It’s unclear how Wu and Li came to know each other, but public records indicate Wu was living in a home  eight blocks away from Li’s family until recently. Records show she might now live in Staten Island.

NYPD sources tell DailyMail.com that Wu was a high performer in the force and rated as ‘exceeding expectations’ in her recent evaluations. She has made about 60 arrests throughout her five-year career.

The double shooting ‘came out of left field’, one source said.

Neighbors described a scene of ‘absolute pandemonium’ to DailyMail.com on Thursday morning.

‘It was pandemonium. Chaos. Two bodies being brought out on stretchers… one having compressions on her chest.

‘She was green, the woman that was having compressions on her chest was green.

‘We saw a lot of cops, detectives… the police officer being brought out.

‘She was very calm which kind of was surreal in a way, to be so calm.

‘I can assume she was in shock after she just shot two people.’

‘It was a lot… it was a sight to be seen. I’ve never seen anything like this in my neighborhood before,’ Pat Santi, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 50 years, said.

Kemper, from the Brooklyn South patrol district, refused to name the officer last night but said that she handed herself in when police arrived at the house and was ‘calm and collected and very forthcoming.’

‘Simply put, she confessed. That’s all I’m going to say,’ Kemper added.

The incident happened at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Kemper said, after Li and Liang arrived home.

‘We believe the cop was inside the residence before the other two females came home,’ the chief said.

One of the dead woman’s friends told The Daily News that Li and Wu lived together in Bay Ridge until about a month ago, when they broke up. They had been together for about two years.

Witness Valerie Wares said she saw police giving CPR to one of the victims and said Wu looked very calm after the shooting.

She told CBS Local that Wu was already outside the home when police arrived and confessed immediately.

‘In her NYPD jacket, which was curious,’ she said. ‘It was so strange. She was so peaceful and calm.’

The shooter had worked Tuesday night and was due to head back to the office on Wednesday evening.

The New York Daily News reported that Wu on Wednesday was sitting on her ex-girlfriend’s bed waiting for them to return.

Wu’s 23-year-old girlfriend was found in the living room, shot in the torso; she is expected to survive.

Liang, 24, was found lying in the bedroom, having been shot in the chest ‘possibly more than once.’ She died from her injuries.

When Li called 911, the operator could hear someone in the background saying, ‘That’s what you get,’ sources said.

Both victims and a third patient – believed to be Wu – were taken to Maimonides Hospital.

The off-duty officer was in custody, Kemper said, and the case is being treated as a homicide.

He said it was unclear whether she used her service weapon, but there was ‘a very good chance it is.’

‘The motive is believed to be domestic in nature,’ Kemper said Wednesday night, adding that the officer had no known disciplinary problems.

The incident is the latest example of NYPD cops going rogue.

Yesterday, it also emerged that two male officers from a precinct in Queens had been ferrying prostitutes around in their patrol cars in exchange for thousands of dollars.

Officers Thomas Diorio and Michael Sardone were dropped from the force after bosses found out about the payments.
