Darts were left in awe once again as Luke Littler decimated five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld to reach the last eight of the World Championship.

The 16-year-old averaged over 105 as he beat his idol to set up a match against Brendan Dolan, who knocked out former two-time champion Gary Anderson in a tight battle on Saturday.

Littler has secured a prize fund of at least £50,000, but will be backed by many to beat Dolan and reach the last four of the competition in his debut year.

He dashed into a 3-0 lead in the tie, before Van Barneveld pulled one back to close the deficit to two. It was too little, too late, however, and Little continued to make history at the Alexandra Palace.

Fans praised his performance again on social media, with Littler’s supporters praising yet another stunning performance on the world’s biggest stage.

‘If you take Littler’s age out of it, you’re still left with an unseeded debutant making a complete mockery of the draw,’ said one X user. ‘It’s absolutely mental what he’s doing on every single level.’

Another said: ‘Luke Littler is a bit good like ain’t he. At 16 I was worrying about January mock exams not beating ex world champions.’

Other fans compared Littler’s showing in this year’s tournament to football scenarios, including likening the youngster to one particular star.

‘Luke Littler is the Jude Bellingham of Darts,’ one user said.

Another added: ‘I’ve just been more entertained watching Luke Littler for half an hour than I have been watching United all season.’

Piers Morgan and Joe Marler also chimed in on the praise, with Marler posting: ‘I love you @LukeTheNuke180.’

Morgan added: ‘This kid’s incredible.. 16 years old and KO-ing legends of the game at a speed that makes your eyes spin. He’s the Wayne Rooney of darts. Congrats @LukeTheNuke180.’
