Piers Morgan calls out New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s ‘draconian’ new Covid rules

Piers Morgan calls out Jacinda Ardern’s ‘draconian’ new rules and says New Zealanders are trapped in a ‘prison camp’

British commentator Piers Morgan has blasted Jacinda Ardern for introducing a raft of ‘draconian’ Covid rules across New Zealand to combat the spread of Omicron.

The Prime Minister on Sunday announced tough measures would come into force after the nation recorded its first confirmed community transmission of the super-contagious strain.

As of midnight Sunday, the country has shifted from ‘orange’ to the stricter ‘red’ settings on its traffic light-style system for Covid-19 management.

Red settings require additional mask use in public settings, require hospitality venues to cap indoor patrons at 100 and seat them all, a cap that also applies to events and gatherings.

The restrictions even saw Ms Ardern announce her wedding to long-term partner Clarke Gayford, scheduled to take place later this month near Gisborne, on the North Island’s eastern coast, would be postponed.

But Morgan was quick to slam the Prime Minister’s crackdown given New Zealand’s high vaccination rate.

‘Given over 90% of New Zealand’s eligible population has had at least 2 doses of covid vaccine, and Omicron is indisputably a significantly less severe strain of the virus, I’m not sure why Jacinda Ardern is implementing draconian new restrictions & cancelling her wedding?’ he Tweeted on Monday.
