Piers Morgan to interview friend Trump

Piers Morgan has landed the first British TV interview with Donald Trump since he took office.

Morgan, a MailOnline columnist and editor-at-large for Dailymail.com, is old friends with the American president and says they catch up every few weeks.

Now the 52-year-old journalist is set to interview Trump about his first year in office, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week.

Morgan previously spoke to Trump for ITV while he was on the campaign trial in 2016, but this will be the first time that he, or any other journalist, has interviewed the US president for British TV since he took office.

Morgan and Trump became friends while the former News of the World editor, who was working at CNN at the time, after he won the US’ Celebrity Apprentice.

The outspoken columnist for MailOnline has been a big supporter of his ‘good friend’ ever since, who in turn reportedly calls him ‘champ.’

‘I genuinely like him,’ Morgan said last year.

‘I have known him through ten years, and saw from The Apprentice he can be charming, funny, smart and his judgment is spot on. He loved drama and arguments and making the right decision and being popular.’

That doesn’t mean that Morgan has always supported Trump’s political decisions.

Following the 71-year-old politician’s highly controversial Muslim ban, Morgan wrote an open letter, saying: ‘Donald, you can’t do this’.

But he later praised Trump saying the 45th president had been using a ‘classic businessman’ technique, to go in hard with ‘an extreme position then dial back.’

‘So now he wants tougher immigration rules from war-torn counties.’

Piers also spoke out to condemn his friend in November, when he urged him to ‘stop this madness’ after Trump retweeted Britain First, a hate group with a disturbing history of racist, extreme views against Muslims.

‘What the hell are you doing retweeting a bunch of unverified videos by Britain First, a bunch of disgustingly racist far-right extremists?’ Morgan tweeted. ‘Please STOP this madness & undo your retweets.’

He also revealed that, despite their relationship, he could never work for Trump.

‘I couldn’t work for an administration I don’t believe in politically,’ he explained. ‘I totally disagree with him on guns, on climate change.’

But their disagreements don’t seem to have put a dent in their relationship.

‘I can see Trump in a way that you can’t,’ Morgan continued. ‘I expect to talk to him a fair bit. I consider him a good friend, and loyal to me.’

Last summer, Morgan told Digital Spy he still received thank you notes from Trump whenever he defended him in public.

He claimed the read: ‘Piers, you’re my hero’ or ‘You’re my champion’.

‘There are worse things in the world than hearing from the President of the United States that you are his hero!’ he said.  ‘But I don’t get these messages as much nowadays because he’s so busy. I am going to see him at the White House soon though, which will be quite odd.’

Morgan said they still keep in touch and chat every three of four weeks and that Trump even sent him a note of congratulations after he landed his role as a breakfast TV host on ITV.

The interview will air on ITV’s Good Morning Britain this weekend.
