Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters resumes scathing attack on David Gilmour

The explosive tiff between Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters and ex-bandmate David Gilmour has resurfaced.

77-year-old rocker Roger took to his personal website on Tuesday to upload a cutting statement detailing the latest drama in his ongoing feud with David, 75.

The current matter concerns the re-release of Pink Floyd’s 1977 LP Animals, which, Roger explains has ‘languished unreleased because of a dispute over some sleeve notes that [biographer] Mark Blake has written for this new release,’ and that ‘Gilmour has vetoed the release of the album unless these liner notes are removed’. 

Roger then goes on to reveal he has agreed that the album can be released without the notes – but proceeds in publishing them under his statement in full, for the public to read.

Roger then claims: ‘He does not dispute the veracity of the history described in Mark’s notes, but he wants that history to remain secret.

‘This is a small part of an ongoing campaign by [Gilmour and his wife Polly Samson] to claim more credit for Dave on the work he did in Pink Floyd, 1967-1985, than is his due.

‘Yes he was, and is, a jolly good guitarist and singer. But, he has for the last 35 years told a lot of whopping porky pies about who did what in Pink Floyd when I was still in charge. There’s a lot of “we did this” and “we did that,” and “I did this” and “I did that”.’

Roger also explains that he is posting the statement to his person website because he is ‘banned by Dave Gilmour from posting on Pink Floyd’s Facebook page with its 30,000,000 subscribers’.

He adds: ‘Let’s hope some of the fans whose access to my words is suppressed by Gilmour find their way here and discover some truth.’

In a second part to his statement, Roger reveals he has been writing his memoirs during the pandemic, and hints that they will be explosive.

‘I am in the middle of writing my Memoirs and inevitably some of it contains references to some of the content above,’ he explains. ‘For anyone with a faint heart, I suggest you sit down, but anyone who likes a good laugh, sit back and f**king howl! I’m going to sit back and howl along with you!’

In order to ‘whet your, and David and Polly’s appetites,’ Roger shares a short extract of his autobiography, which he claims proves that ‘DG was sowing the seeds of the false narrative’ since at least 1982. 

He rounds off his post: ‘THE FULL STORY OF WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IS IN MY MEMOIRS! Love, R.’

Roger accompanies the post with a short clip of him addressing his fans, reiterating what he says in the statement.

He explains that he had a lot of time on his hands during the lockdown, and if he didn’t write his biography now he never would.

MailOnline has approached reps for David for comment. 

A little over a year ago, Roger hit out at David after he was refused access to the band’s social media sites, as he references in his latest blog post.

In a video message on Twitter he claimed the guitarist had taken over the band and former members such as himself were no longer allowed to contribute.

Roger made the admission as he explained why his new version of track Mother had not been shared on any of Pink Floyd’s official channels.

The songwriter explained: ‘One and half million of you have viewed our new version of Mother, which is lovely – it really warms my heart.

‘But it does bring up the question, why is this video not available on a website that calls itself The Pink Floyd website?

‘Well, the answer to that is because nothing from me is on the website – I am banned by David Gilmour from the website.’

Roger claimed the drama between the band members was ongoing, and he had been trying to gain access to the sites for some time.

He continued: ‘About a year ago, I convened a sort of Camp David for the surviving members of Pink Floyd at a hotel at an airport in London, where I proposed all kinds of measures to get past this awful impasse that we have and predicament we find ourself in.

‘It bore no fruit, I’m sorry to say, but one of the things I asked for, I suggested that because whoever the 30 million of you are who subscribe to the web page, you do so because of the body of work the five of us created.

‘That’s Syd [Barrett], me, Rick [Wright], Nick [Mason] and David over a number of years.

‘And in consequence, it seems to me that it would be fair and correct if we should have equal access to you all and share our projects.’ 

Roger revealed he aimed to make peace with David when he met up with him and Nick, but it didn’t go to plan and he insisted that a reunion is just not going to happen.

He said at the time: ‘It wouldn’t be nice. It would be f**king awful.

‘Obviously if you’re a fan of those days of Pink Floyd, well then you have a different point of view. But I had to live through it. That was my life.

‘I know in the wake of it I’ve been cast as something of a villain by whoever … so be it! I can live with that. But would I trade my liberty for those chains? No f**king way. 

Taking another swipe at his former bandmate, Roger continued: ‘David thinks he owns it. 

‘I think he thinks that because I left the band in 1985, that he owns Pink Floyd, that he is Pink Floyd and I’m irrelevant and I should just keep my mouth shut.’

Roger went on to criticise David for using Pink Floyd’s social media channels to promote wife Polly’s Von Trapped Family livestreams. 

He continued: ‘We’re all welcome to our opinions, but there have been rumblings and grumblings in the ranks. 

‘I’m told by friends of mine that some of the questions being asked are, ‘Why do we have to sit and watch Polly Samson, year after year, month after month, day after day – and the Von Trapps reading us excerpts from their novels to get us to go to sleep at night?’

‘It’s a very good question, and yet we don’t get to hear anything about what Roger’s doing, about This Is Not A Drill, or when he makes a piece of work. 

‘None of his work is publicised, or his film with Sean Evans US + Them, which has just gone out is not mentioned.

‘We’re not allowed to even mention such a fact on the official Pink Floyd website. This is wrong. We should rise up… or, just change the name of the band to Spinal Tap and them everything will be hunky dory.’

Roger previously sued his former bandmates David, Nick and late keyboard player Rick Wright, to stop them from using the Pink Floyd name which was a battle he ultimately lost and later accepted was ‘wrong’ to start

Since his departure, Roger has only performed with Nick and David back in 2005 at the Live 8 charity concert in London, and during his own performance of The Wall at The O2 arena in 2011 on a rendition of Comfortably Numb.

Roger founded Pink Floyd back in 1965 alongside Syd (guitar, lead vocals), Nick (drums) and Richard (keyboards, vocals).

David joined the band two years later in 1967, and Syd left the following year due to mental health problems. 

There were several reports of in-fighting with the band, with Richard leaving the group in 1979, followed by Roger in 1985.   

Roger has amassed a staggering net worth of £247 million thanks to a hugely successful solo career, as well as his companies Roger Waters Music UK and Roger Waters Music Overseas. 

In 2005, the original lineup of Roger, Richard, David and Nick reunited for the first time in 24 years for the Live 8 concert in London, three years before Richard’s death.
