Polar bear gives birth to cub in heart-warming footage

  • The tiny cub is seen rolling around while its mother, Tonja, nurses it
  • The cub was the second to be born to Tonja after her first was stillborn

Surveillance footage at Berlin Zoo has captured the moment a polar bear gave birth to a tiny cub.

The video shows the first few moments of bonding between the mother and her newborn baby.

Eight-year-old Tonja gave birth to the cub in the early hours of Thursday morning. The cub is the latest addition to the German zoo.

The cub, which is yet to be named, was the second of two to be born to Tonja and six-year-old Wolodja after their first, Fritz, was stillborn.

Berlin’s wildlife park released footage of the birth on Friday, saying both mother and cub are doing well.

It shows Tonja giving birth to the minuscule, hairless cub, before turning to nurse it clean with her tongue.

Eight-year-old Tonja was filmed giving birth to her cub at Berlin Zoo in the early hours of Thursday morning

Born deaf and blind, as is natural for polar bears, the tiny infant is seen rolling around and attempting to stand.

Polar bear cubs have just a 50 percent chance of survival.

As such, zookeepers will be keeping Tonja isolated over the coming days to ensure complete calm for mother and cub.

The footage shows the bear nursing her young by licking it with her tongue. The pair are to be kept in confinement over the coming days to ensure successful recovery
