Armed police and soldiers swooped on a remote farm near a tiny Welsh village and arrested a man accused of plotting acts of terror.

Police are still searching the property in Trimsaran, south Wales, after chemicals were found there during the raid, which took place last week under strict secrecy.

Villagers today said they were still being kept in the dark about the operation, while police have released only limited information and blocked the road the farm is on.

The raid took place under strict secrecy last week, and included a detailed search after chemicals were found at the property near the village of Trimsaran in south Wales. Police were still blocking the road outside the farm on Saturday (pictured)

The isolated site is tucked away in a densely wooded valley and is closer to the neighbouring village of Pinged than Trimsaran itself, which is around 15 miles from Swansea.

One elderly man in Trimsaran, a small village spread out along the B4308 between Llanelli and Kidwelly, said he had seen some police activity on Tuesday.

‘I saw two helicopters circling around and around earlier in the week,’ said the man, who lives up on the hill above the village and did not want to be named.

‘I don’t know the new people living there, but I used to know the people who lived there before.’

A drinker at the Bird In Hand said: ‘I didn’t see or hear anything on Tuesday, the first I knew about it all was when it popped up on the news.

‘I’ve lived here for many years, and I haven’t seen anything like this before.’

The man, who also asked to remain anonymous, added: ‘Not much happens around here – this cycling event is probably the most excitement we’ve had all year.’

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed they were carrying out a ‘specialist search’ after chemicals were found at the premises.

The force said in a statement: ‘A 57-year-old man was arrested as a result of the initial search on Tuesday [June 11].

‘He remains in custody on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, under section 41 of the Terrorism Act (TACT) 2000.’
