A man and a woman were released on bail today after being arrested over the death of a four-month-old baby girl at a house. 

Police and paramedics were called to the property in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, shortly before 7am yesterday and found the baby was not breathing. 

The baby was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police said a 44-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were arrested in connection with the death.

Both have since been bailed while investigations continue. Residents said they woke up yesterday morning to see police forensics vehicles parked outside the house.

One woman saw investigators working at the house, saying: ‘The police forensics have been here all day taking photos. I’ve seen them flashing inside the house.’

The resident said it was a ‘usually quiet’ street, adding: ‘Nothing like this has ever happened before. It’s scary but the police said it’s nothing for us to worry about.’  

A police spokesman said: ‘Emergency services were called at 6.44am on Sunday to an address in Huddersfield to a report of a four-month-old baby not breathing.

‘Paramedics and police attended the address and the baby was taken to hospital where sadly it was confirmed the baby had died.

‘Police arrested a 31-year-old female and a 44-year-old male in connection with the child’s death. Both have now been bailed pending continuing enquiries.

‘A post-mortem will take place this week to determine the cause of death. Detectives are continuing enquiries to determine the exact circumstances of the death.’
