Two women were arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a serious crash in which one of them ‘finished off a glass of wine’ as police arrived, officers said.

Police were called to Huyton, Merseyside, in the early hours of Sunday following the collision between two vehicles.

A white Mercedes car had careered into a blue parked Ford Focus car, with both vehicles sustaining significant damage.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, at around 4.15am, one of the women was ‘finishing off a glass of wine.’

Photographs taken showed an empty wine bottle in the footwell of the passenger seat, along with a glass.

What appeared to be a second full bottle was seen in a storage compartment near to the car’s handbrake.

On Thursday, Merseyside Police said they had arrested two women, aged 33 and 35, both from Huyton, on suspicion of unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and drink driving.

They have both been released under investigation.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: ‘Officers were called at around 4:15am on 28th June following reports of a road traffic collision on Lyme Cross Road, Huyton.

‘A white Mercedes car is reported to have collided with a parked Ford Focus.

‘Two women, aged 33 and 35, both from Huyton were arrested at the scene on suspicion of unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and drink driving.

‘They have both been released under investigation.’
