Police who stopped a Mercedes in a city centre found a jaw-dropping 13 bin-bags stuffed with cannabis on the back seats.

A man, aged between 21 and 25, has been charged with intent to supply drugs after the astonishing swoop in Plymouth, Devon on July 21.

The drug sacks were piled so high in the back that the driver might not have been able to see other traffic in his rear view mirror.

Residents saw the plastic bin liners full of drugs after police swooped on the car in Bernice Close in the Lipson area of the city.

Onlookers said police halted the car after it failed to obey an order to stop.

The driver fled from the scene and hid in a nearby garden but was later arrested.

Police said he faces charges of possession of drugs with intent to supply, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

At one point there were up to eight police cars and a van at the scene.

One eye witness said ‘I heard police shout things like ‘come out’, open the door’ and ‘we have a police dog’.

‘Plenty of people were out at the front of their houses in Bernice Close.’

‘The police were taking photos of the inside of this black car.’
