Police investigating after man’s body found in park by resident walking his dog

  • A dog walker made the grim discovery of a body laying face-down in park reeds 
  • The man, aged between late 40s and 50s, was found Saturday at about 9.45am 
  • Body was found south of Sydney, NSW, and have not identified the man

A man’s body has been found laying face-down in a park by a dog walker in Sydney’s south. 

A resident walking a dog came across the dumped body near a sporting field in Shellharbour, south of Wollongong, at about 9.45am Saturday.

The man is believed to be aged in his late 40s or early 50s and was found lying in the reeds at a local wetland.

New South Wales Police said local officers had established a crime scene at the park on Wattle Road.

Lake Illawarra chief inspector Andrew Koutsoufis told reporters the body was found among the ‘rocky and unstable’ thoroughfare which was ‘not a regular pathway’.

The man was reportedly wearing dark tracksuit pants, white joggers and a dark blue and white striped top when he was found. 

Regular soccer games unfolded with the crime scene ‘backdrop’.

Locals took to social media claiming a school athletics carnival was held in the area just days earlier.

Others shared their respects for the man saying they were shocked to hear the incident happened ‘so close to home’.

The man is yet to be identified and investigations are continuing.
