Police release chilling CCTV of murder victim’s final moments before he was viciously attacked and thrown in a canal – as homicide detectives try to piece together his movements

  • Darren Round was found in water in Kings Norton, Birmingham, on February 15
  • A post mortem revealed he suffered facial injuries consistent with an assault 
  • Homicide detectives are now trying to build a picture of his final movements
  • Footage shows his final moments shortly before being discovered in the canal 

Chilling footage shows a murdered man’s final moments shortly before he was viciously attacked and dumped in a canal.

Darren Round, 48, was found in the water near Masshouse Lane in Kings Norton, Birmingham, at 8.40am on February 15.

A post mortem revealed Mr Round suffered facial injuries consistent with an assault before entering the water near his home. 

Homicide detectives have now taken over the investigation and are trying to build a picture of his final movements.

West Midlands Police are appealing for anyone who was in the Masshouse Lane and Shannon Road area of Kings Norton, or walking on the canal towpath, from 7.30pm on Friday night and 8.40am the following morning.

CCTV shows Darren walking along the canal near to Wharf Road Bridge, in the direction of Shannon Tunnel at 12.40am on the morning his body was found.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Griffiths said: ‘Our investigation is progressing, however we need to understand Darren’s movements from 7.30pm when he left home to when his body was tragically found in the canal.

‘We are after any information whatsoever where we can understand why Darren was attacked and who was responsible for Darren’s death.

‘We believe Darren regularly walked on the canal network and knew the area well.

‘We specifically want to speak to anyone walking, cycling or living along the stretch of canal, between Shannon Tunnel and Wharf Road Bridge who may know something.

‘If you saw Darren walking, or saw or heard anything suspicious, we are urging to you contact us.

‘This information, no matter how small it may seem, may help us pin together the events leading to Darren’s death.’

Following enquiries from our homicide detectives, a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He has since been released on police bail while our investigations continue.
