Police say they are still searching for the unidentified gunman who killed three and injured nine after opening fire on a Halloween party in Long Beach, California. 

The gunman started shooting at guests at a Halloween party at a Long Beach home on Tuesday at about 10.45pm.

Authorities said between 25 and 30 people were at the party when a man in dark clothing with his face concealed fired at guests from an alley behind the home next to a nail salon.

The suspect then fled in a getaway vehicle.

Police described the scene as ‘horrific’ and said blood was spattered everywhere.

All of those who were injured – including seven females and two males – suffered gunshot wounds. They are between 20 and 49 years of age.

‘The crime scene is horrific. There is blood everywhere,’ Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna said. 

Luna said they were looking for at least one suspect, possibly more. 

He said the guests at the party included a group of co-workers.

Witnesses said people wearing costumes were seen limping out of the building following the attack. 

The scene was filled with chaos when first responders arrived, according to authorities. 

Neighbors had reported hearing up to 30 shots fired but police said it was too early to confirm.
