Police seize giraffe statue stolen from Perth pet store

  • Giant fibreglass giraffe, nicknamed Gerry, stolen from Perth pet shop Saturday
  • Thieves cut a hole through store’s wire fence and got away with the statue 
  • Police were called the next day by man who spotted giraffe in home next door
  • Officers executed a search warrant and seized the giraffe, returning it on Sunday

A giant giraffe statue stolen from a Perth pet shop has been returned to its rightful owners after a resident spotted its head sticking over the top of the burglars’ fence.

The 3.6m fibreglass giraffe was nicked from The Bird and Fish Place in the early hours of Saturday morning, prompting the owner to offer a $3,400 reward for its return.

The next day police received a call from a local resident who noticed the replica giraffe, nicknamed Gerry, standing in his neighbour’s yard.

Police held on to Gerry at their station until the pet shop’s owners were able to come and pick it up and take it back – just in time for school holidays. 

Worker Jason O’Meara told Perth Now he was glad the giraffe – considered a bit of an to be a bit of an icon in the region – had been returned in time for the holiday period. 

‘There is some good left in the world. We’re very pleased. especially because it’s the school holidays,’ he told the publication.

Manager Connie Stevens said the thieves had cut through the wire fencing to steal the giraffe under the cover of night. 

Police have not laid any charges and the investigation is ongoing.
