Police are investigating after finding a sophisticated cannabis-growing operation inside a commercial property.

The property on Steel Street in Newcastle’s west was searched by police at 2am on Tuesday morning after a tip-off.

Police found an extensive number of cannabis plants growing in the building as well as an ‘elaborate’ hydroponic set-up.

Detectives, target action group officers and forensic services were still at the scene on Tuesday afternoon and New South Wales police are investigating.

There was nobody in the building at the time police searched it.

Police have asked anyone with any information on the cannabis operation to come forward.

Pictures showing the large number of plants and the sophisticated hydroponic set-up were posted to the New South Wales police Facebook page.
