Three people have died and a fourth is in a critical condition after a string of violent attacks in Melbourne’s east police believe could be linked.

A man was found with fatal stab wounds about 12.15am on Thursday after police were called to Kew in the city’s inner east.

The victim, who is yet to be identified, was taken to hospital after being found near Cotham Road and Queen Street but later died.

A second man was then shot dead by police who were trying to arrest him on nearby Walton Street.

He also is yet to be identified and police are investigating whether the incident is Kew is related to two others late on Wednesday night. 

About 10.40pm, an unknown man approached a protective services officer at Jolimont Railway Station.

‘It is understood an unknown man approached a PSO and engaged in conversation before assaulting him with an edged weapon and fleeing the scene on foot,’ a Victoria Police spokesperson said. 

The PSO suffered non-life threatening injuries to his upper body and was taken to hospital for treatment. 

At 11.20pm, two women were then found in a vehicle in Hawthorn with what appeared to be life threatening stab wounds.

Wednesday 10.40pm – PSO suffered non-life threatening injuries to his upper body after being assaulted with ‘edged weapon’.

Wednesday 11.20pm – Two women found in vehicle in Hawthorn with what appeared to be life threatening stab wounds.

One later died in hospital and the other is still in a critical condition.

Thursday 12.15am – A man was found with fatal stab wounds after police were called to Kew in the city’s inner east.

A second man was then shot dead by police who were trying to arrest him on a nearby street.

The two women were taken to hospital after police were called to Coppin Grove, where one died in hospital and the other is still in a critical condition.

‘Investigators are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the three incidents in order to determine if they are linked,’ the police spokesperson said.

‘At this stage, police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incidents and there is not believed to be any ongoing risk to community safety.’
