Police have opened fire on the driver of an alleged stolen tow truck after a dramatic chase through the streets of Melbourne.
The pursuit for the alleged stolen truck began on Grange Rd in South Morang, north-east of the CBD, about 4pm on Monday.
The truck was followed to The Lakes Boulevard area where it was seen allegedly ‘driving erratically’ and through red lights, police said.

The chase ended about 35 kilometres away after the driver allegedly crashed into a tree on Wright Street in Sunshine about 5pm.
Police then fired a shot at the unidentified male driver, who was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital in a serious condition.
He has been arrested by police.
‘Special Operation Group and Critical Incident Response Team intervened at this stage and the male driver was shot by police during the arrest,’ Victoria Police said in a statement.
‘No one else was injured during the incident and the investigation is ongoing.’
