Police cordoned off an area in Whitehall after a suspicious package was reported. 

Specialist units deployed a bomb disposal robot to examine the object. 

It is expected the investigation will cause disruption to this evening’s rush hour.

Scotland Yard said they received reports of the package at 3.01pm.  

Dozens of police closed junctions while a Metropolitan Police helicopter flew overhead. 

The bomb squad arrived at the scene a short time later and unloaded their tracked remote control robot to investigate the package which is in the vicinity of the HMRC building on Whitehall. 

Shortly before 4pm the object was successfully removed and the cordon has been lifted. 

Scotland Yard confirmed the investigation into the incident is continuing. 

Separately, a person could be seen climbing up scaffolding near the base of the Big Ben tower at parliament.
