A Polish national arrested on the eve of the General Election has appeared in court today accused of terrorist and explosives offences.

Filip Bednarczyk, 25, who was living in Luton, is charged with collecting information useful for terrorism under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He is also accused of making or possessing an explosive under suspicious circumstances, contrary to section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.

Bednarczyk appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in a grey prison-issue tracksuit and spoke only to confirm his name, age, and address

Jane Stansfield, prosecuting, told the court: ‘An arrest and search warrant were executed on morning of December 11, that led to the seizure of number handwritten docs, a number digital media storage devices and also a quantity of sulphur powder.’

A computer, mobile phone, and gaming device were also seized.

‘Examination by experts in explosives confirmed that the powder which was seized is an ingredient in at least one set of instructional material which was located at the address,’ she added.

Beth O’Reilly, defending, said there was no application for bail and there was no indication of plea.

District Judge John McGarva, remanded Bednarczyk in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on January 3.
