Poll: Joe Biden favored in Florida over Donald Trump even after the president changed his residency

Joe Biden is the only Democrat favored to beat Donald Trump in the battleground state of Florida, a poll released Tuesday revealed.

The former vice president bested the president by two per cent in the latest Mason-Dixon Polling and Strategy of Jacksonville poll, earning 47 per cent support in a hypothetical general election matchup to Trump’s 45 per cent.

In head-to-head matchups with the other three top Democratic contenders, Trump comes out on top among the 625 registered Florida voters.

He tops South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg 49-45 per cent; independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders 49-44 per cent; and progressive Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren 52-42 per cent.

Buttigieg, Sanders and Warren’s results against the incumbent president all fell outside the poll’s 4 percentage point margin of error.

In the four different matchups somewhere between 6-8 per cent of respondents said they were undecided between the Democratic candidate or Trump.

The poll, taken December 11-16, have lined up with other Florida polls that show Biden as the front-runner candidate, even over Trump, while no other Democratic candidate appears to be able to best the president.

Trump narrowly won Florida, a swing state, in 2016 with 48.6 per cent of the vote compared to Democratic competitor Hillary Clinton’s 47.4 per cent.

In late October of this year, the president, a life-long New Yorker declared he and first lady Melania Trump were changing their residency to Florida.

In September the couple quietly filed paperwork to change their official residence from New York to Florida, where they spend most of their vacation and free time.

The first couple is currently vacationing through the new year in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort is located.

‘1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House, is the place I have come to love and will stay for, hopefully, another 5 years as we MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, but my family and I will be making Palm Beach, Florida, our Permanent Residence,’ Trump tweeted at the end of October.

‘I cherish New York, and the people of New York, and always will, but unfortunately, despite the fact that I pay millions of dollars in city, state and local taxes each year, I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state,’ he continued in the series of tweets.

‘Few have been treated worse. I hated having to make this decision, but in the end it will be best for all concerned,’ Trump wrote. ‘As President, I will always be there to help New York and the great people of New York. It will always have a special place in my heart!’

The poll indicates that few voters intend to cross the aisle to vote for a candidate not in their political party.

No Democrat candidate, of the 15 still in the running, attracts more than 5 per cent of the Republican vote in the Mason-Dixon poll matchups. But Trump earns somewhere between 6-9 per cent of Democratic votes when he was paired up against Warren, Sanders and Buttigieg.

He only earned 3 per cent of Democrat votes against Biden in the Tuesday poll – exhibiting more Democratic loyalty to the former vice president.
