Fortunately for the stricken dog, one driver noticed the problem on January 17 and alerted authorities.

Network Rail then warned drivers to ‘run with caution’ from 7.30am and approximately 20 minutes later, an operations manager spotted Poppy lying between the tracks.

The dog was treated by Garston Vets who said she had suffered a couple of broken ribs.

Sarah Holmes if Garston Vets told the BBC it was ‘to everyone’s amazement’ that Poppy survived her ordeal.

Owners Liz and Chris Chapman took their pet to the vet although they expected bad news.

Ms Holmes said: ‘Her face was extremely swollen, she had a large wound on her back and was in considerable pain. But we were amazed that the only broken bones were a couple of ribs.

‘It’s something that her owners never believed would happen.

‘She is making good progress but, unsurprisingly, has a degree of discomfort still. Fortunately, she hasn’t lost her appetite.’
