Popularization of weed in youngsters

The use of weed has now become a norm in Canada since its legalization. First, it was believed to be used medicinally only but contrary to belief it was always used as a recreational substance.

The evidence of its recreational use dates back to the Greek Era, where a Greek historian Herodotus observed an Iranian-nomadic group of Scythians inhaling the smoke of the plant to get steamed or to get high.

It was also used widely in the Middle East by the Arabs and was first called hashish there, but was soon deemed illegal since the use of such substances was prohibited in their religion.

Since it is widely used medicinally there are certain controversies and misconceptions about the use of weed among teenagers and their parents too.

Most of the parents fail to believe that their kid might have knowledge of weed or know how to use it. But weed has become popular more than other drugs which are believed to be dangerous cocaine, Heroin, LSD, or alcohol in recent years.

WHY THE USE OF WEED HAS BECOME POPULAR AMONG YOUNGSTERS?

Natural herb: Many parents and their kids think that marijuana is a natural herb and has less or no side effects since it comes from a natural source and if grown organically it can have fewer negative or side effects, this is a total misconception, and weed (marijuana) whether grown organically or inorganically has the same chemical constituents which can lead to serious side effects.

Depression: More than 11% of the population aged between 15-24 experienced depression in their lives depression is a mental illness that is still in some areas is considered taboo and teens experiencing it fear seeking any parental help or medical help, they try to solve the chaos in their mind on their own which also leads to the use of many substances including weed pot.

Unemployment is also one of the biggest factors to aggravate depression in teens and adults.

Parental use: Most of the teenagers whose parents already use marijuana as a recreational substance and approve it for their use also seem to develop the mindset that the use of weed is normal and doesn’t have any side effects on mental or physical health.

They tend to use or try it in their adolescence because they already have access to it and parental approval too.

Traumatic experiences: Teens who had experienced emotional or physical abuse in the past tend to use weed more than others, they see it as a way to forget their past traumatic experiences, pain, and fear which may include physical, domestic violence, or sexual abuse from their parents, teachers, loved ones or others.

Bullying is also a factor that comes into this list, teens who experience bullying use weed more frequently than others.

Boredom: Most teenagers find it exciting to try out new stuff and label it as an adventure, they try to use weed often when bored or alone, they also want to escape their feeling of loneliness and anxiety. They rather prefer the feelings of relaxation, contentment, and euphoria.

Stress and problems: Most of the teenagers were reported to claim that they while on weed had better experiences in solving their problems e.g.: while taking an exam or going for a job interview,  or controlling other stressful conditions.

But it can be dangerous practice too because an overdose can lead to serious consequences too and a habit or mind-set might also develop that without their required dose they are nothing and can’t achieve their desired goals and achievements in life.

Social media peer pressure: Minds of the teenagers have been compromised by social media nowadays and most teenagers even adults feel responsible to follow the new trends and information without thinking about its consequences, whether it is true or false or whether it can be beneficial or harmful for them.

They are determined to use weed and other substances to stay connected socially or digitally and to remain acceptable in their society, some also use it to look popular and cool or due to the fear of abandonment by their company or friends.

RISKS OF USE AT AN EARLY AGE:

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): If weed or marijuana is used at an early age or in adolescence years it is reported that due to its potent constituent THC which is a psychoactive agent, it has more potent effects unlike caffeine, theophylline, etc.

Its use could lead to negative effects on the minds of the young and there can be a risk of psychosis, hallucinations, impaired cognition, problems in memory and learning, and the brain when matured or reached the age of 21 could develop schizophrenia or dementia which could lead to poor quality of life which can result in a negative impact on the career of an individual.

Cannabidiol (CBD): CBD is the only FDA-APPROVED component of weed that is widely used for medical conditions in children like epilepsy, Tourette’s disorder, pain, seizures, Cancer induced pain, nausea, etc.

However, scientists are still researching its effects on the minds of the young, and is usually employed if prescribed by a medical practitioner.

Legalization of use of weed: Weed became legal in Canada on the 17th of OCTOBER 2018 but the most surprising factor was that since the legalization of weed the percentage of its use amongst the teenagers aged 15-17 recorded a decrease from 20% to 10% according to Statistics by Canada’s National Cannabis Survey.

It is due to the availability and the sale of weed in the black market, since it was labeled as legal now there are proper physical stores and online- dispensaries set up in different states for instance visit BudStars which sells weed for medical and recreational purposes in the form of edibles, vapes, oils, and tinctures.

As compared to the past now it’s a sale in the black market is illegal and is against the law.

This resulted in the proper selling of weed in the country in which a proper ID is required and an adult or 18+ can only buy it, which resulted in the drop in the use of weed by adolescents.

This also resulted in the check and balance of strains that weren’t adulterated and were potent enough to be used successfully.
