Port Augusta: Mother-of-five Betty Anne Buzzacott learns her fate after stabbing a relative with a broken bottle

A mother-of-five is behind bars after she stabbed a female relative with a broken glass bottle after she wouldn’t share her alcohol during a drunken night out.

Betty Anne Buzzacott, 34, was sentenced to more than two years jail after a jury found her guilty of causing harm with intent to cause harm.

The court heard that she had been drinking with a group of people, including the victim, in Port Augusta, South Australia on February 23, 2023.

The pair ended up on the foreshore area near the Oasis Apartments.

The court heard that the victim stopped sharing her alcohol with Buzzacott, sparking rage from the mother-of-five, The Advertiser reported.

‘You took hold of an empty bottle and smashed it against rocks,’ Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett told Buzzacott.

‘You went then for the victim, striking her with a bottle from behind.’

The court heard that the victim didn’t know straight away that she had been stabbed but soon noticed she was bleeding badly.

She went to the Oasis apartments, where she was assisted by two off-duty paramedics.

The woman suffered a large 5-6cm deep cut to the left side of her jaw, near her ear.

A doctor who treated the woman estimated she lost about 100ml of blood from the attack.

The court also heard that Buzzacott has problems with alcohol.

She was sentenced to two years and two months jail with a non-parole period of one year and two months.

‘You broke a bottle and used it to stab someone who had not provoked you at all,’ the judge told Buzzacott.

‘Your victim is a relative and you may have to account to her or her family when you are released from prison.’

Buzzacott’s sentence was backdated to June 27.
