Powerball’s biggest jackpot of the year has been drawn and one lucky Australian could be the country’s third-biggest winner ever.

The winning numbers for Powerball draw 1517 are 28, 10, 3, 16, 31, 14, 21 and the Powerball is 6.

Up to half of Australian adults are expected to have bought an entry into Thursday night’s draw which has grown after going unclaimed in recent weeks.

Only six people in Australia have won a jackpot of that size previously and if just one person wins the prize they will share the title of the country’s third-biggest winner.

The last time Powerball offered a $100million prize, in November 2024, a flurry of Australians bought tickets at the last minute.

On the day of the draw, the peak of sales was at 5.47pm, with 6,415 tickets being sold in a minute. Anna Hobdell, The Lott spokesperson, said ‘life-changing’ wins can happen to anyone.

‘The next chapter of someone’s life could begin this Thursday with $100 million up for grabs. The win could happen to anyone, a teacher, a tradie, a retiree, or a parent,’ she said.

‘Australia’s biggest lottery winner was an ordinary Adelaide man who scored $150 million in 2024. He told us that when he discovered his multi-million-dollar windfall, he never screamed so loud or jumped so high.’

Staff from The Lott are prepared to contact division one winners, dependent on whether ticket holders registered their in-store or online entries with The Lott Members Club.

‘Take your mobile off silent and if you see a call from an 07 number shortly after 8.30pm, pick it up!’ The Lott Spokesperson Matt Hart said.

Winners will receive their prize two weeks after the draw regardless whether they purchased their ticket online or in-store.

If you ticket is registered with The Lott, winnings will be sent straight into your online account while if you purchased it in-store, you need to return to the store with your ticket to claim your prize.

Prize winners must complete a form in-store and then the money will be sent to your nominated bank account.

Although The Lott does not organise financial advise for winners, it’s recommended big lottery winners speak with a financial advisor.

‘We strongly recommend our winners seek financial advice tailored to their circumstances so they enjoy the benefits of their prize for many years to come,’ Mr Hart said.

Australians have tended to be more pragmatic with lottery winners compared to UK winners after hearing stories of winners ‘who’ve blown it all’.

‘For the vast majority, [Australians] want to pay off the house and make the money work for them and their families for many years to come,’ he added.
