  • Police say she could not bear to be publicly shamed for her single parent status

A pregnant woman and her infant were found dead in India after she tried delivering the child herself because she was ashamed of her single status.

Police in the city of Gorakhpur believe the 25-year-old was using YouTube tutorials to deliver the child such was her shame at being unmarried.

Authorities were called to the building when other tenants saw blood seeping through the door on Sunday.

After breaking down the door they discovered the mother lying in a pool of blood with the baby boy.

Police officer Ravi Rai told the Times of India that the woman from Bahraich and the body of her infant were handed over to relatives for burial.

They did not reveal her name but confirmed she had rented the apartment just four days ago.

She had been living in Gorakhpur for the last four years and was studying for exams.

The police officer said they were cross-referencing data on her mobile phone with the times of death to ascertain when she had been watching the tutorials.

Her landlord told the Hindustan Times that the young woman had assured him that her mother would be coming to visit her imminently and would accompany her to hospital for the birth.

The paper reported that her family had not been forthcoming with any information.
