A woman was killed and another seriously injured, losing her unborn child, following a head-on crash after a driver allegedly tried to evade police.

A highway patrol officer first spotted the Holden Commodore with fake number plates on Sunday at about 2:40am on Newcastle Road in Wallsend, west of Newcastle.

The officer stopped behind the car, which was carrying four teenagers, behind a traffic light before sounding the police siren.

The Holden Commodore sped away on the wrong side of the road, with police deciding not to pursue due to safety concerns.

A short time later, a second police vehicle spotted the Commodore in North Lambton allegedly crossing onto the wrong side of the road.

Speeding onto the wrong side of the road, the Holden Commodore then crashed  head-on with a Hyundai sedan travelling in the opposite direction just minutes later.

The 55-year-old passenger in the Hyundai, who was on holiday from India, died at the scene.

Her pregnant 28-year-old daughter, who was driving the Hyundai, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. She was 25 weeks pregnant and has since lost her her unborn child due to the crash.

Police are appealing for information to locate a man seen nearby and a 17-year-old girl believed to be the front passenger.

Police said the teenage driver and front passenger of the Holden Commodore fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

Two other passengers, a 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old girl, were taken to John Hunter Hospital where they remain in a serious condition.

Police allege the Holden Commodore was not stolen and was registered to the passenger who fled the scene with the driver.

It’s understood the 19-year-old driver is known to police.
