Premier League leaders Liverpool would sit in NINTH if Europe’s top divisions merged this season on a points-per-game basis… but which side would top the table?

Liverpool only have the ninth-best points-per-game record out of Europe’s top five leagues this season – despite leading the Premier League.

The Reds have picked up 51 points in 23 matches this campaign, which has catapulted them to the top of the Premier League and given hopes of claiming another title to wave off Jurgen Klopp.

However, it’s a total which is only good enough for 2.22 points per game, far off the pace set by some other sides.

It’s not even the best average in England. Manchester City have picked up 49 points in 22 games, meaning they scrape ahead of Liverpool with 2.23 points per game.

Even then, that’s only good enough for eighth in Europe’s top five divisions, as per FBref. So, who’s top?

Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen side sit top with an average of 2.60 points per game

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side sit top with an average of 2.60 points per game

That honour falls to Bayer Leverkusen, underlining the stellar job that Xabi Alonso is doing.

Leverkusen are hoping to stop Bayern Munich’s streak of 11 consecutive Bundesliga title wins, and picking up 52 points in 20 games is one way to go about that.

Alonso’s side have won 16, drawn four, and lost none of their league games, garnering a whopping average of 2.60 points per game.

For context, when Manchester City won the title with 100 points in 2017/18, that gave them an average of 2.63 points per game.

Inter Milan (2.59), Real Madrid (2.52), Bayern Munich (2.50), and surprise LaLiga package Girona (2.43) round out the top five.

At the other end of the spectrum, England have the second-worst side in Europe’s top five leagues.

Sheffield United have managed a measly 0.43 points per game and sit rock bottom of the Premier League.

It’s going to take a miracle for Chris Wilder’s side to save their season as they are already 10 points from safety – the same number of points that they’ve picked up in 23 games.

Almeria are on course for the worst season of the 21st century after collecting just six points in 23 games

Almeria are on course for the worst season of the 21st century after collecting just six points in 23 games

But spare a thought for Spanish side Almeria, who are having the worst season on record in the 21st century – and perhaps beyond.

The LaLiga strugglers are bottom of the table with a grand total of six points in 23 games, a record good enough for 0.26 points per game.

That means for every game Bayer Leverkusen play in Germany, Almeria require 10 games to accrue the same number of points.
