A Premier League star’s girlfriend was caught smuggling a stun gun and cosh into the UK on a private flight, it was claimed tonight.

The Instagram-famous partner of an England footballer, who has not been named, claimed the illegal weapons were for her ‘protection’, a source told the Sun.

And she is said to have burst into tears when confronted by Border Force guards at London Biggin Hill Airport, Kent, after flying in from Europe on Sunday night.

The woman at first tried to sneak the items through security by insisting she had nothing to declare.

But she was collared by the officers who demanded she open her bag, revealing the stun gun and baton, which were seized.

‘It seems she very naively thought it would be OK to bring the stun gun into the UK to give her protection,’ the source said.

‘She clearly had no idea possession of weapons like this is taken very seriously.’

It is unclear if the girlfriend has been prosecuted, and the Home Office refuses to comment on individual cases.

The England ace’s partner apparently brought the weapons as a defence in case she was targeted by criminals – following several high-profile raids on footballers recently.

Only last week, Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli was held at knifepoint by two masked men during a raid on his £2million north London home.
