President Joe Biden slams Republican debt deal

President Joe Biden further dents hopes that deal over US debt ceiling can be achieved in coming days – calling Republican offers ‘unacceptable’

Warning: President Joe Biden

President Joe Biden has further dented hopes that a deal over the US debt ceiling can be achieved in the coming days – calling Republican offers ‘unacceptable’.

Republicans and Democrat politicians have been arguing over whether to raise or suspend the debt ceiling, which sets how much money the government can borrow.

US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen warned last week that if they did not reach a deal, the government could run out of cash by June 1.

But talks last Friday ended without progress.

Speaking at the G7 meeting in Japan yesterday, Biden said of the Republicans: ‘Much of what they’ve proposed is simply unacceptable.

‘It’s time for Republicans to accept there is no bipartisan deal to be made solely on their partisan terms. They have to move as well.’

The Democratic leader also suggested that some Republicans would use the disastrous economic impact of a US economic default to undermine his chances of re-election next year.
