President Trump kicked off his day by lashing out at ‘Alex’ Baldwin on Twitter after actor Alec Baldwin said it was ‘agony’ portraying The Donald on Saturday Night Live.
‘Alex [sic] Baldwin whose dieing [sic] mediocre career was saved by his impersonation of me on SNL, now says playing DJT was agony. Alex [sic], it was agony for those who were forced to watch. You were terrible. Bring back Darrell Hammond, much funnier and a far greater talent!’ tweeted President Trump at 5:42am on Friday.
Twenty-five minutes later he deleted that tweet and posted a new one, with a few edits.
‘Alec Baldwin, whose dying mediocre career was saved by his terrible impersonation of me on SNL, now says playing me was agony. Alec, it was agony for those who were forced to watch. Bring back Darrell Hammond, funnier and a far greater talent!’ said the Commander-in-Chief.
Baldwin, who is no stranger to a Twitter feud, was quick to respond to President Trump’s social media slam.
His last tweet may have been the most vicious as he wrote: ‘And Mr President… please ask your wife to stop calling me for SNL tickets. (Hey, Melania…we’ve got Charles Barkley this Saturday!)’
Just for the taste of it: Alec Baldwin said in an interview on Thursday that it had become ‘agony’ portraying President Trump in Saturday Night Live (Baldwin above on the February 3 episode)
Response: President Trump then attacked Baldwin on Twitter at 5:42am on Friday in a tweet that misspelled the actor’s name as ‘Alex’ and the word ‘dieing’ (above)
Amended response: He corrected the post 25 minutes later (above), saying Alec’s ‘mediocre career was saved by his terrible impersonation of me on SNL’
Deep dig: ‘And Mr President… please ask your wife to stop calling me for SNL tickets. (Hey, Melania…we’ve got Charles Barkley this Saturday!)’ tweeted Baldwin (above)
‘Agony though it may be, I’d like to hang in there for the impeachment hearings, the resignation speech, the farewell helicopter ride to Mara-A-Lago [sic],’ wrote Baldwin.
‘You know. The Good Stuff. That we’ve all been waiting for.’
He then followed that up an hour latter with another dig at his longtime adversary.
‘Looking forward to the Trump Presidential Library. A putting green. Recipes for chocolate cake. A live Twitter feed for visitors to post on. A little black book w the phone numbers of porn stars. You’re in and out in five minutes. Just like…’ wrote Baldwin.
The actor then posted his Melania comment follow by one more tweet, stating: ‘Signing off for now. On my way to shoot MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN and grateful to be working w Edward Norton, Cherry Jones, Willem Dafoe, Bruce Willis, Bobby Canavale, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael K Williams.’
He then added: ‘If this is mediocrity, give me more.’
The actor has been playing President Trump on Saturday Night Live since September 2016, and admitted multiple times in the past that he assumed it would be a two-month job.
That did not turn out to be the case however once he won the election.
It was not all bad for Baldwin however, who managed to pick up an Emmy in the Best Supporting Actor category for his work on the variety show.
That was not the case for Hammond, who told The Washington Post that he was destroyed when he learned the news.
‘I just started crying,’ said Hammond of learning the news.
‘In front of everyone. I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock, and I stayed in shock for a long time. Everything wiped out. The brand, me, what I do. Corporate appearances canceled. It was a hell of a shock, and all of it was apparent to me in one breath. That ends me.’
Make SNL great again: ‘Alec, it was agony for those who were forced to watch. Bring back Darrell Hammond, funnier and a far greater talent!’ said the Commander-in-Chief on Twitter (Trump above in February 2016)
Tough break: Hammond (above in March 2016 playing Trump on SNL) had been playing President Trump for over 20 years when he learned that Baldwin would be replacing him in 2016, a move that left him in tears
Attack back: ‘Agony though it may be, I’d like to hang in there for the impeachment hearings, the resignation speech, the farewell helicopter ride to Mara-A-Lago [ sic ],’ wrote Baldwin (above)
Still goign: ‘Looking forward to the Trump Presidential Library. A putting green. Recipes for chocolate cake. A live Twitter feed for visitors to post on,’ wrote Baldwin (above)
Hammond had portrayed Trump during his 15 years on the show, and then returned for guest spots once the real estate scion announced that he was running for office.
That job proved to be especially convenient for Hammond as he became the show’s announcer in 2014 when Don Pardo passed away at the age of 96, having been the voice of the popular NBC show since it first premiered on the network in 1976, missing just one season.
Things look like they could be taking a turn for the better however in the wake of Baldwin’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter that drew the ire of President Trump.
‘How much longer with [sic] you play Trump on Saturday Night Live?’ Baldwin was asked in an interview promoting his new Sunday talk show for ABC.
‘Every time I do it now, it’s like agony. Agony. I can’t,’ said Baldwin.
‘If things don’t go in the right direction for the midterms… I could go out on the street, stand on any corner and tap 10 people on the shoulder. And all 10 of them, in all likelihood, would be more qualified – ethically, morally, intellectually and spiritually – than Trump.’
He then added: ‘I’ll vote for Mitt Romney. I don’t care. Anybody over this guy. It doesn’t matter. We have to get rid of him.’
