Pretty Crystal set to be supplemented for 1,000 Guineas after pocket rocket stuns hot favourite Dance Sequence in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket

Richard Fahey will consider supplementing Pretty Crystal for the 1,000 Guineas after his pocket rocket delivered the long overdue victory her talent deserves.

All talk before the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket on Wednesday had revolved around Dance Sequence, the unbeaten Godolphin horse who had been ante-post favourite for the first fillies’ Classic of the season, but she was second best to Pretty Crystal. 

The winner isn’t entered in the 1,000 Guineas, which takes place on May 5, but Fahey could throw her in after he watched her scamper down the Rowley Mile to defy odds of 18-1. It was her first win since making a successful debut at Ripon last June.

‘She stuck her head down and had a real cut at it,’ said Fahey. 

‘She arrived here fit. She had been working well and we had been pleased with her. Hand on heart, I was a fraction disappointed she didn’t win a big race last year, but she’s getting better with age.

‘It is always hard, when they have been beaten two or three times, to target a Guineas. I’m beginning to regret that I didn’t put her in but we will speak to Sheik Rashid and see what we do from here.

‘I was delighted for her. The beauty with supplementing is that you can have a good look and see what is going to turn up and then make a decision.

‘She acts on the track and that’s a big thing at Newmarket. She flew down the track there.’

Dance Sequence did not damage her reputation, but the horse to note for the 1,000 Guineas is Fallen Angel, who is trained by Karl Burke. 

She had a gallop before racing yesterday and moved through the exercise smoothly. Her odds were trimmed accordingly.
