This is the incredible moment a hippopotamus managed to fend off an attack from a pride of lions.
The huge hippo stood defiant in the face of the attempted attack and merely walked away as no less than four lions tried to tackle him to the ground.
A video captured in Rhino Ridge in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, shows the lions repeatedly trying to bring the hippo down by jumping on to its back and attacking it, but to no avail.
Video footage captured the moment a pride of lions tried to bring down a hippopotamus – to little avail
First of all, one lion tried – and failed – to bring down the huge beast, before back up arrived in the form of three fellow lions
The footage initially shows one lion latched onto the back of the hippo, trying to plunge its teeth into his backside.
As the hippo tries to shake him off and walk away, he is pursued by a second lion, who tries his best to bring him down.
However, even when further back up arrives in the form of two more lions, the hippo remains steadfast and manages to move away from his attackers, upping his pace slightly.
Though the video cuts out with the lions still latched to the hippo’s back, the filmer, known online at PaulOnSafari claims that he eventually escaped without harm.
The pride chased after the hippo, who managed to shake them off and carry on walking
As the group of lions continued to pursue the hippo, they each took it in turns to latch onto it and try to bite its backside
Despite the lions efforts, the hippo managed to escape unharmed, according to a safari park ranger, known online as PaulOnSafari, who took the footage in Rhino Ridge in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
