Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said goodbye to his father at a funeral service in Sydney. 

John Morrison died on Wednesday January 22, aged 84, and was farewelled in the city’s eastern suburbs on Thursday.

Mr Morrison, his wife Jenny and mum Marion paid tribute to John’s life in a private memorial service at Church in the Marketplace, in Bondi Junction.

John served in the Army as part of his National Service and was also a NSW Police Officer and later, Commander. He was also a dedicated member of the Force for his entire career.  

The Morrison family were supported by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Heath Minister Greg Hunt and Member for Wentworth Dave Sharma at the service.

Mr Morrison thanked the Australian public when he briefly referred to his father’s passing at the National Press Club on Wednesday.

‘My brother and my mother and I very much appreciate it. I mean, the outpouring has been quite overwhelming, frankly. Thousands and thousands of ­people,’ he said.

‘We’ll remember him tomorrow and I’m not going to say any more than that, because I’ll lose it.’

On Thursday, Mr Morrison wrote on Facebook: ‘We will remember you always Dad, as we say farewell today.’

When Mr Morrison announced John’s death last week, the prime minister said his father ‘lived a great life and was much loved’.

John was a ‘loving husband’, a ‘wonderful’ father and a ‘devoted’ grandfather, Mr Morrison said.

‘Dad lived a life of love, faith, duty and service,’ the prime minister said.

The father-and-son also shared a commitment to their Christian faith. 

‘Our family will miss him terribly, but we are extremely thankful for his great blessing in all of our lives,’ Mr Morrison said.

‘Love you Dad and well done good and faithful servant.’
